Free styling

Every time I listen to the Blues channel in XM radio I’m amazed that there are so many variations on a basic musical chord progression: I - IV - I – IV – I - V – IV - I. If you’re a musician, you know that if you’re in the key of C, the chords would be C – F – C – F – C - G – F – C. In fact, this is the standard for many other styles of music as well.

Think about your art or craft. Does it have this kind of accepted formula? If so, have you ever tried to step out of it? What happen if you tried free styling? What if you took your camera outside and took 20 photos from 2” above the ground without looking at the viewfinder? What if you mixed water colors with magic markers? What if you wrote a script of dialogue between a chipmunk and an elephant trying to figure out how to keep the owl from hooting at night so they can get a good night’s sleep and wake up early to make the day-long journey through the purple forest to attend the deer’s fourth birthday party which only comes once every… well, four years?
