This is an excerpt from a study published in the American Journal of Public Health in February, 2010. It also included “movement-based creative expression (dance) and creative writing. Both of these areas were found to have positive effects as well. My guess is that they could have included just about any form of creativity – making things with Lego pieces, finding objects in cloud formations - and it would have shown positive results. Here’s one of the final statements from the study:
“Despite methodological and other limitations, the studies included in our review appear to indicate that creative engagement can decrease anxiety, stress, and mood disturbances.”
I have a morning ritual where I create graphic art pieces from photographs I’ve taken. I rarely miss a day. Maybe that’s why I haven’t had a cold in a long time…
